The Disjunction

"The sky darkened and the sorceries that had ravaged the heavens only moments before fell silent. I watched as across the firmament the burning remains of the Gods' fell writhing to earth, the ground quaking with their death throws. Yet I barely comprehended the final moments of the Trinity for from where they fell I saw a vision more terrible and alien then I had ever feared to see. A tower of darkness spearing into the sky, the sorcerous storms pouring into its depths drawn in by some irresistible force to the heart of that endless emptiness."

"As I watched the nothingness seemed to swell and distort and in horror I saw that it began to expand, a weeping wound in the fabric of creation. I knew then that I was witness to the unmaking of the world but despite my terror I could not tear my gaze away from that consuming oblivion for I had looked into void and in doing so had bound my soul to it."

- Zinthar the Apostate, Chronicler of the Apocalypse

The Rim of Existence

At the rim of existence, plunging into the earth and towering into the heavens is the Disjunction; a wall of nothingness and a vast window into a featureless black void. It flows over the landscape silently enveloping anything and everything in its path never slowing or pausing and entirely uncaring.

So far the Disjunction has never moved quickly and a gentle walking pace is sufficient to outrun it, at least for those that still have the will to. Its approach is preceded by the great storms that exist at its edge and the maddened flight of the creatures of the land and air who seem to sense its coming.

Nothing that passes into the Disjunction ever returns and if something is plunged into it whatever portion enters is excised as if by a perfect razor, many are those who have lost limbs testing this. Those that have dared to step into the darkness have never reappeared and no feat of engineering or sorcery has ever contacted them.

The Disjunction is nothing less than the destroyer of the world and the ultimate end of all things, yet despite the horror it instils in people there is something undeniably awe-inspiring about it, something that draws the eye deeper and deeper into the endless oblivion. People who have seen it have been known to stand mesmerised until it washes silently over them and those brave or insane enough to spend any length of time in proximity to the Disjunction are changed by it in some indefinable way, nevermore bringing themselves to move far from the nothingness.

The Umbral Storms

Beyond the interface of the Disjunction and stretching ten or so leagues into the world seethe the Umbral storms; vast tempests whose thunderous rage heralds the approach of the Disjunction. Formed of titanic thunderheads that boil as the atmosphere streams into the Disjunction beyond the storms are furious; lacing the air with crackling lightning and scourging the ground with howling winds.

So strong is the influence of the Disjunction that at the rim itself the clouds are pulled into twisting streamers of vapour that fall endlessly into the void and an unnatural calm descends below them creating an “eye” of sorts. It is this unnerving region of tranquillity that allows the Watchers to make their home so close to the edge of oblivion.

When the Umbral storms approach the void is not far behind. The wise plan their flight long before the storms come upon them. Those less wise must attempt to flee their homes as the storms envelop them in a perversion of nature's fury.
